AGRODEP recently conducted its first training course – out of eight planned for 2012 – in Dakar, Senegal on March 13-15, 2012. The course “Building and Updating a Social Accounting Matrix” was taught by Dr. Ismael Fofana who also coordinates the network component of AGRODEP.

AGRODEP welcomes twenty nine new members who joined the Consortium this month. The new members come from fifteen different countries in Africa. They bring diverse experiences and professional backgrounds and interests. The Consortium consists now of eighty four members. The growth will continue as AGRODEP launches new membership rounds each year.

AGRODEP released its first edition of the AGRODEP Bulletin, a publication providing insights into major economic development issues in Africa. The Bulletin is published by the African Growth and Development Policy (AGRODEP) Modeling Consortium. Its objective is to present research and capacity building activities undertaken by AGRODEP and announce the publication of new economic data and statistics on Africa.

AGRODEP has launched its third membership application round. To be considered for membership, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
* Must be citizen of an African country
* Must be based in Africa
* Must have obtained a Ph.D. within the last 15 years, currently pursuing a Ph.D. degree, or obtained a Master’s degree combined with technical skills and experience.

AGRODEP will offer eight (8) training courses for its members in 2012. These courses are the most preferred by AGRODEP members out of eighteen (18) that were proposed to them in a survey conducted in September 2011. The courses include training on data (SAMs, household surveys), CGE modeling, poverty analysis, impact evaluation, and panel data econometrics.

On December 15-16, 2011, Antoine Bouet and David Laborde from IFPRI Washington D.C. presented at a workshop organized jointly by the (UCAD) and IFPRI in Dakar, Senegal. AGRODEP is pleased to announce the AGRODEP Award for Excellence in Publication. The objective of this new initiative is to provide an incentive for, and to reward excellent publications by AGRODEP members in top ranking academic journals.

IFPRI recently signed an agreement with the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding financial support for the participation of up to ten (10) AGRODEP researchers to the 15th Annual Conference on Global Economic Analysis to be held in June 2012 in Geneva, Switzerland. The goal of the conference is to promote the exchange of ideas among economists conducting quantitative analysis of global economic issues.
