Kenya Global Financial Inclusion (Global Findex) Database 2011

Short Name
Kenya Global Findex 2011

Recognizing the need for better data to support the financial inclusion agenda, the World Bank’s Development Research Group, with a 10-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has constructed the Global Financial Inclusion (Global Findex) database. As the first public database of indicators that consistently measure people’s use of financial products across economies and over time, the Global Findex database fills a major gap in the financial inclusion data landscape. Covering a range of topics, the database can be used to track financial inclusion policies globally and develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of how people around the world save, borrow, make payments, and manage risk.

The indicators in the Global Findex Database are drawn from survey data covering more than 150,000 people in 148 economies—representing more than 97 percent of the world’s population. The survey was carried out over the 2011 calendar year by Gallup, Inc. as part of its Gallup World Poll, which since 2005 has surveyed approximately 1,000 people annually in up to 157 economies, using randomly selected, nationally representative samples. The target population is the entire civilian, noninstitutionalized population age 15 and older. Surveys are conducted in the major languages of each economy.

The Kenya portion of the Findex includes data from 1,000 face-to-face interviews conducted primarily in low income communities.  A graphical overview of Kenya's financial inclusion results can be found here on the country dashboard.

Information on the methodology for all Global Findex surveys is located here.
