GLSS 4 is the fourth round of The Ghana Living Standards Survey implemented by the Ghana Statistical Service in 1998/99. It covered a wide range of topics including demographic characteristics of the population, education, health, employment and time use, migration, housing conditions and household agriculture.
The survey was based on a nationally representative sample of households. A two stage stratified sampling technique was used. The stratification used was based on geographical factors, ecological zones and location of residence. For the first stage, 300 Enumeration areas (EAs) - the Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) - were selected using systematic sampling with probability proportional to size method (PPS). The size measure was the 1984 number of households in the EA. For the second stage, a fixed number of 20 households were systematically selected from each selected EA. In total, the two stage survey covered a total of 6,000 households.
Three types of questionnaires were used: a household questionnaire, a community questionnaire and a price questionnaire. The household questionnaire collected information on household composition, education, health, employment migration, housing characteristics, agriculture, household expenditure, non-farm enterprises, remittances, and credit, assets, and savings. The community questionnaire recorded information on infrastructure and other facilities available to rural communities. The price questionnaire was used to collect information on prices of essential commodities in the local market.
