The Ghana 2003 Core Welfare Indicators Questionnaire (CWIQ II) is the second round of a household sample survey implemented by the Ghana Statistical Service with the financial and technical assistance of the World Bank. The first round of the survey was conducted in 1997. The aim of the survey was to provide indicators to assess the country’s progress in tackling poverty.
The survey was conducted through a two stage sampling of national households. At the first stage, a random systematic sample of 27 Enumeration Areas (EAs) was independently drawn from each district stratum/domain based on probability proportional to size of the EA (i.e. the number of households in the EA as obtained from the 2000 Population and Housing Census). At the second stage, households within each EA were listed and 405 households were selected systematically from each EA except for the metropolitan areas. The numbers of households sample in each EA were as follows: Accra (2,430); Kumasi (11,620) and Shama-Ahanta East (1,215) as well as the Tema Municipal Area (810), (Ghana Statistical Service). The survey covered a total of 49,005 households nationwide.
The questionnaire consists 7 sections and covers a wide range of topics: list of household members, education, health, employment, household assets, household amenities, poverty predictors, children under 5, subjective wellbeing, violence crime and safety, communications.
