The Global Development Network is launching a call for expressions of interest from research teams from Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania interested in producing high-quality research on industrial policies. The research will be undertaken as part of the program, Mobilizing Local Knowledge to Improve Competitiveness Strategies, launched by GDN as the chosen partner of the Trade and Competitiveness Global Practice of the World Bank Group, with the financial support of the Competitive Industries and Innovation Program (CIIP).
The program aims to mobilize developing country researchers to produce contextualized, evidence-based research on the subject of industrial policies, to contribute to an understanding of how governments and companies in developing countries interact to improve industrial productivity, and how these impacts can be measured. Through rigorous documentation of existing policies, the program aims to generate locally produced, quality, empirical academic knowledge to inform debate on competitiveness strategies and to promote industrial productivity in African countries.
GDN will support research teams from Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania for a period of 18 months from May 2017 to October 2018. The research grants will be provided to 3 selected teams, for grants of up to USD 41,500 per study.
Key features of the call
Stage 1: Call for expressions of interest
- The current call asks for detailed expressions of interest. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to intend a training workshop in Africa in May 2017 to exchange on the topic of industrial policies with other teams, policymakers and experts in the field, and to transform their expression of interest into a full-fledged research plan
- Open to teams of researchers belonging to a university or other research organizations based in Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania
- Maximum of 4 researchers per team, including the principal investigator; all must be citizens of a developing country and the principal investigator must be a permanent resident of the country he/she is studying
- Researchers can belong to different institutions in the same country, but the grant will be given to the institution hosting the principal investigator
- The research project will be conducted over a 18 month period, from May 2017 - October 2018
- Deadline for expressions of interest: 30 March 2017, 5:00pm (Nairobi time, GMT+3)
Stage 2: Proposal submission
- After the workshop, teams will be given one month to submit a full-fledged proposal to be reviewed by the World Bank and a high level panel of experts
- Selected teams will then have the opportunity to implement their research proposal
