Poverty Reduction, Equity and Growth Network Announces Call for PhD Students

The Poverty Reduction, Equity and Growth Network (PEGNet), at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, has announced a need for two Ph.D. students from and currently in Senegal to participate in a project on small-scale fisheries.  The project, called "Small-Scale Fisheries in West African Waters: Assessment, Resilience, and Ecological-Economic Modeling of Key Fish Species," is part of a larger project examining an ecosystem approach to the management of fisheries in West Africa. Candidates will engage in fishery surveys in Senegal and Gambia in order to map small-scale fisheries in the area, determine their major species, and investigate how they cope with anticipated major threats using microeconomic empirical analysis.

Candidates will work in their home country and be supervised by local project partners. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the methodological approach, candidates will spend 3-6 months working with project researchers in France and/or Germany. The project is expected to last for three years.

Candidates should have a Master's degree in geography, ecology development, or resource economics, as well as advanced knowledge of statistical or econometric methods and experience with quanitative data analysis. Applications should be submitted to Dr. Linda Kleeman at linda.kleemann@ifw-kiel.de.
