“South Africa’s agricultural population of 4.9 million people accounts for almost one-tenth of the country’s total population of 50.5 million. On the production level, cereals, meat, fish, wood fuels and industrial roundwood register hearty numbers. South Africa also has a strong per capita caloric intake of 2 986. South Africa’s life expectancy, however, is 51 years of age and the infant mortality rate is 62 out of 1 000 live births; these numbers are more attributable to the country’s HIV/AIDS epidemic than to its food security situation.”
