The Ethiopia Rural Household Survey (ERHS) is a unique longitudinal household data set covering households in a number of villages in rural Ethiopia. Data collection started in 1989, when a team visited 6 farming villages in Central and Southern Ethiopia. In 1989, IFPRI conducted a survey in seven Peasant Associations located in the regions Amhara, Oromiya and the Southern Ethiopian People’s Association (SNNPR). Civil conflict prevented survey work from being undertaken in Tigray.

The questionnaire was administered in three rounds between February and December, 1995, to 404 households in 45 villages in five districts: Dowa, Nkhotakota, Rumphi, Mangochi, and Dedza.

This survey includes data from the Enquête des Petits Producteurs (Small Farmer Survey) carried out by IFPRI and LARES (Laboratoire d'Analyse Regionale et d'Expertise Sociale, Cotonou, Republic of Benin). The objectives were to describe rural livelihoods, examine how conditions for farmers have changed over time, and assess the impact of agricultural reforms on rural households. The training of enumerators, field testing of the survey and final revision of the questionnaire took place in June-July 1998.

The study that the Collective Action in Canal Irrigation Systems Management: The Case of Doho Rice Scheme in Uganda, 2001 survey data was collected for examines the extent and determinants of farmer participation in the collective maintenance of Doho Rice Scheme (DRS) and compliance in paying mandated irrigation fees. Existing regulations and incentives for participation in collective action are also examined.

This survey was conducted during the Policies For Improved Land Management Project in Uganda, 1999-2003. The long term objective of the project was to contribute to improved land management in Uganda, in order to increase agricultural productivity, reduce poverty and ensure sustainable use of natural resources, with an immediate purpose of helping policy makers identify and assess policy, institutional and technological strategies to improve land management.

This survey was conducted to identify the current capacity within Nigeria for providing evidence for policymaking and for creating this capacity for future generations. This is part of the program to support the designing and implementing of evidence-based, pro-poor, gender sensitive and environmentally sustainable agricultural and rural development policies and strategies in Nigeria. The data presented originates from the survey conducted in 2008. A total of 25 institutions and 184 individuals were sampled.

In 2000, UNICEF-Ghana and IFPRI agreed upon a program of action research to evaluate the scope for food-based strategies to reduce micronutrient undernutrition in Ghana. The food-based strategies were planned as one component of UNICEF’s broader Integrated Community Based Development (ICBD) program. Although UNICEF had been operating its ICBD program in other districts, the food-based micronutrient strategies were first introduced as part of the ICBD program in Savelugu/Nanton District.

The objective of the project has been to assess the impact of different casual factors and identify effective policy strategies to combat soil nutrient depletion problem in the highlands of Uganda. The research has utilized market, community, and household surveys to measure the impact of past and present policies on soil nutrient management in the Ugandan highlands; and developed market and household level models, based on the survey data, to evaluate the impacts of alternative policy options.

This dataset is the baseline survey for the impact evaluation of the World Bank-funded program: the PSAOP (Programme de Services Agricoles et Organisations de Producteurs) in Senegal. The objective of this program was to strengthen the Rural Producers Organizations (POs) capacities to provide services for their members. The program also created PO councils at the district level “Communautés Rurales” in Senegal, through which the organizations can exchange information on their experiences.
