The WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) for Water Supply and Sanitation is the official United Nations mechanism tasked with monitoring progress toward the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) relating to drinking water and sanitation (MDG 7, Target 7c), which is to: "Halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking-water and basic sanitation".
Access to drinking-water and to basic sanitation is measured by the MDG indicators:
- Proportion of population using an improved drinking-water source, and
- Proportion of population using an improved sanitation facility.
Three tools were provided to dynamically build water supply and sanitation data representations in the form of maps, graphs, and tables that users can then export.
For each output, users can choose the:
- type of data (water or sanitation coverage);
- geographical area of interest (country, regional, or global);
- level of aggregation (country or group level);
- year(s);
- areas (urban, rural, or both).
