"Food security remains an important issue in Sudan where 8.8 million individuals, or 22 percent of 43 million Sudanese, suffer from undernourishment. Forty-one percent of children are malnourished and underweight, while 43 percent are malnourished with a stunted growth. Although 45 percent of the population are urban dwellers, 22 million work in agriculture, which makes up 28 percent of Sudan’s Gross Domestic Product. The country has some 208 000 hectares of permanent crops."
