Hiywot Menker

Dr. Hiywot Menker holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, and a Master's in Agricultural Economics from the then Alemaya University, Ethiopia. She is an Environmental and Agricultural Economist currently affiliated with the University of Pretoria. Her professional journey is marked by a commitment to researching and addressing critical issues in the fields of economics, environment, and agriculture.


Dr. Hiywot's areas of expertise encompass a range of topics, including the economics of land use and cover change, climate change adaptation within agriculture, food security, optimal and equitable water resource utilization and distribution, and climate change mitigation strategies related to land and livestock management. Her research also extends to assessing the impact of agricultural and enterprise development programs on household welfare. The outcomes of her research have been disseminated through presentations at numerous conferences, as well as in various articles and reports. Dr. Hiywot has actively participated in projects and was awarded fellowships from the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) in 2017 and Climate Research for Development (CR4D) in 2019. She had been a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Johannesburg and the University of Pretoria. She has also contributed to education by teaching and supervising students while working at universities. In addition, she served as a planning officer at Alemaya University and has been engaged as a consultant in Pretoria. Dr. Hiywot has a mastery of statistical and econometric methodologies like panel, time series, and survey data. Her analytical toolkit includes software such as Stata and EViews, enabling her to analyze quantitative data effectively. Additionally, she is well-versed in impact evaluation techniques and poverty analysis software (DASP).
